I think I just really like the way Jane Harper writes。 She doesn’t throw a lot crazy stuff in that makes you have to want to believe that all of these impossible things could have happened。 It’s a mystery that is solved with a believable story that is enjoyable to read。 I wish the survivors were real because I’d love to see a picture of them。 I give the cover a 4, it would be a 5 if the survivors were on it。

The story was good but I felt that it built towards an ending that was somewhat of a let down。

This is definitely one of the author’s better ones, which is saying something。 Love the sense of place she creates。 And liked the way the story unfolded。

Lorna

Not quite as good as her others but it might be worth a bit more than3

This is the 2nd Harper novel I've read and her style in this novel is similar - a slow unfolding of the mystery, realistic characters and an Australian setting。 I'm disappointed I didn't enjoy this more, and not quite sure why I didn't。 I don't think the relationship between the main character and his wife sat quite right with me。 Will read more from Harper, even though missed the spot this time。 This is the 2nd Harper novel I've read and her style in this novel is similar - a slow unfolding of the mystery, realistic characters and an Australian setting。 I'm disappointed I didn't enjoy this more, and not quite sure why I didn't。 I don't think the relationship between the main character and his wife sat quite right with me。 Will read more from Harper, even though missed the spot this time。 。。。more

Because her other books have been so good, I expected more。 It's not bad but, like me, it has a rather flabby middle and can be pretty mundane at times。 Because her other books have been so good, I expected more。 It's not bad but, like me, it has a rather flabby middle and can be pretty mundane at times。 。。。more

This is the 4th book I read by Jane Harper I didn't enjoy it。 I had no connection to the characters nor did I care I hope her next book has a better storyline。 This is the 4th book I read by Jane Harper I didn't enjoy it。 I had no connection to the characters nor did I care I hope her next book has a better storyline。 。。。more

Great writing。 I love this author。

I loved The Dry and The Lost Man so I was eagerly waiting for this book。 So disappointing。 There was nothing interesting or gripping about the story。 The characters were bland。 In Jane Harper's other books, there is a fascinating premise that hooks you in and keeps you wondering and questioning。 That didn't happen here。 The strong sense of place is the book's one redeeming quality。 I loved The Dry and The Lost Man so I was eagerly waiting for this book。 So disappointing。 There was nothing interesting or gripping about the story。 The characters were bland。 In Jane Harper's other books, there is a fascinating premise that hooks you in and keeps you wondering and questioning。 That didn't happen here。 The strong sense of place is the book's one redeeming quality。 。。。more

I read reviews about this book and a lot of people said it wasn’t as good as the others。 I really liked it。 It was different from the others but still a very good read! Good characters, mystery, suspense and a bit creepy。 What’s not to love。 It was also sad and a bit heartbreaking!

"Are [The Survivors] supposed to be happy or sad?。。。Is it a celebration of the people who made it, or a memorial to the ones who didn't?"I really enjoyed all the other Jane Harper books I've read and I was looking forward to this one。 I'm not sure it lived up to my expectations。 It felt slow, and I kind of didn't care who killed Bronte, I was more interested in the disappearance and supposed death of teenage Gabby Birch 12 years ago。 The ending was really sad, and it left me feeling frustrated。 "Are [The Survivors] supposed to be happy or sad?。。。Is it a celebration of the people who made it, or a memorial to the ones who didn't?"I really enjoyed all the other Jane Harper books I've read and I was looking forward to this one。 I'm not sure it lived up to my expectations。 It felt slow, and I kind of didn't care who killed Bronte, I was more interested in the disappearance and supposed death of teenage Gabby Birch 12 years ago。 The ending was really sad, and it left me feeling frustrated。 (view spoiler)[It comes out that Gabby died when the storm came to the caves 12 years ago, she was there with Kieran's friend Sean looking for her older sister, Olivia, who we know was hooking up with Kieran nearby。 Sean tries to kiss her and she pushes him away because she's only 14 and very shy。 He only thinks of himself and is consumed with embarrassment and shame。 He believes that she'll tell everyone about it, he'll have to leave town, etc。 and so he leaves her behind when they try to get out of the flooding caves。 She dies all by herself simply because she doesn't want to kiss an 18 year old。Sean kills Bronte in the present day because she has photos that prove that Gabby and Sean were there the night of the storm and he's trying to keep his secret。 He dies at the end。 I'm not sad about it。 There are a few red herrings, like author George Barlin, whose yard is getting all torn up (is he looking for something?), and Kieran's dad Brian who has major dementia。 My favorite character was Mia and I'm glad baby Audrey wasn't ever in danger。 I kept mixing up Ash and Sean because they didn't really seem like real people, or maybe we just didn't spend as much time with them。 Or maybe I read it when I was tired and this isn't Harper's fault。 In her previous books, the setting was such a part of the books - like the desert or the forest。 But this just felt like a small town that could be anywhere。 Also the two caves were hard for me to visualize。 I kind of wish we'd spent more time with the shipwreck - not totally sure how that diving scene was important (this is the kind of thing that was interesting but didn't add to the plot moving forward)。"How would Kieran measure up against the nightmare of his own child lost? He thought about Trish [Birch], and Bronte's parents, and - his heart constricted in a familiar way - [his parents] Brian and Verity。 He could feel the flutter of Audrey's pulse。 He didn't know how any of them got through a single day。 He couldn't bring himself to imagine what it took。" (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

3。5 stars。 Harper has such an atmospheric way of writing that sucks me in。

This was kind of blah to me。 I might of been spoiled by the 4MK trilogy by J。D。 Barker that I finished before this book。

Another excellent slow-burn from Jane Harper。 Loved how the mystery played out and I didn’t guess the killer, high points in my book!

Jane Harper weaves a splendid mystery。 It was a page turner, but I felt it finished too quickly。 Well worth the read。

I continue to enjoy all of Jane Haper's novels。 She crafts a pretty compelling plot with likable and complex (enough) characters。 I enjoyed this town, its people and its secrets。 A character's inner monologue in a key scene almost wrecked this book for me。 It attempts to demonstrate motive, but it just sounds dumb and out of character。 Also, the book ends awfully abruptly。 I continue to enjoy all of Jane Haper's novels。 She crafts a pretty compelling plot with likable and complex (enough) characters。 I enjoyed this town, its people and its secrets。 A character's inner monologue in a key scene almost wrecked this book for me。 It attempts to demonstrate motive, but it just sounds dumb and out of character。 Also, the book ends awfully abruptly。 。。。more

Rounded up from 2。75This book was pretty much what I expected。 Nothing special in my opinion。 The writing was fine, but the story was very slow。 I would definitely classify this as a mystery and not a thriller。 There was really nothing thrilling about it。 I just found myself wanting more。 There wasn't enough payoff for my liking。 The ending was also a bit abrupt and not worth the wait。 That being said, the atmosphere of the small seaside town was satisfying。 That's all I can be bothered to say s Rounded up from 2。75This book was pretty much what I expected。 Nothing special in my opinion。 The writing was fine, but the story was very slow。 I would definitely classify this as a mystery and not a thriller。 There was really nothing thrilling about it。 I just found myself wanting more。 There wasn't enough payoff for my liking。 The ending was also a bit abrupt and not worth the wait。 That being said, the atmosphere of the small seaside town was satisfying。 That's all I can be bothered to say sadly。 。。。more

This book isn’t bad, but it’s also not necessarily good。 I think the storyline/concept of the book is good and has a lot of potential, but the book lacks action。 The twist at the end is less than dramatic and doesn’t make up for the slow burn of the rest of the book。 Needed more at the end。

Lost me with the ending。

initial thoughts: liked, but didn’t love this one。 what I liked?: the location, Tasmania, was beautiful and the author really made you feel like you were right there。 the ending was also a bit of a surprise, the “whodunit” and why I didn’t see coming until it was revealed。what I didn’t like?: how we got to the ending。 the first half of this book was (for me) incredibly slow paced and introduced us to a lot of characters。 while this was more of a “slow burn” mystery, there were some characters & initial thoughts: liked, but didn’t love this one。 what I liked?: the location, Tasmania, was beautiful and the author really made you feel like you were right there。 the ending was also a bit of a surprise, the “whodunit” and why I didn’t see coming until it was revealed。what I didn’t like?: how we got to the ending。 the first half of this book was (for me) incredibly slow paced and introduced us to a lot of characters。 while this was more of a “slow burn” mystery, there were some characters & events that happened that really didn’t add to the story, in my opinion。overall, if you enjoy Jane Harper, or a good, slow burn, this one may be worth checking out。 。。。more

This was gonna be a 1 star for a bit because it was so lifeless and boring, but I thought it stuck the ending pretty well and delivered some nice commentary on dementia and family dynamics。 Overall though there are much better books in this genre so I would not recommend

Keeps you on your toes and the ending is completely unexpected。 I loved the twists and the use of flashbacks to keep you wondering how everything connects

This book was filled with "OH, something is about to happen。。。then nothing happens。" All throughout it did that。 It was dragging on and on that by the end when something finally did happen, it wasn't that big of a deal。 The ending was actually pretty lame。 Not a fan of this one。 This book was filled with "OH, something is about to happen。。。then nothing happens。" All throughout it did that。 It was dragging on and on that by the end when something finally did happen, it wasn't that big of a deal。 The ending was actually pretty lame。 Not a fan of this one。 。。。more
